We didn’t think racism wouldn’t exist in Canada, but turns out runnin’ thru the 6 with your woes could be very hazardous to your health if you’re black.
Black lives don’t matter in the 6
The Ontario Human Rights Commission studied police brutality data for 7 yrs and concluded that black residents in Toronto are 20 times more likely to be shot dead by cops than white residents. A deep dive into the stats reveals an even darker face of racism.
- In fatal shooting cases, 20% of white people were armed vs 11% of black people
- In all police brutality cases, 54% of white people had criminal records vs 44% of black people
- In all police brutality cases, 62% of white people attacked/threatened officers vs 44% of black people
Basically, black people were less likely to be armed, have criminal records, and be aggressive than white counterparts but still were 20X more likely to be killed by the police.
Toronto police says they’ll do “even better” in response to the report.
“Do even better”? Word?
Toronto police acknowledged the racial bias but didn’t forget to raise questions about the methodology of OHRC’s study – although they didn’t clarify what they specifically had problems with. They also added that they will commit to “doing even better” when it comes to reducing racial bias.
