Michigan Dem Rep. Rashida Tlaib proposed a bill that will give $3K a year to low-income adults.
Universal Basic Income Lite
Sen. Kamala Harris announced a similar bill last year but what makes Tlaib’s idea different is that her bill has no phase-in minimum income requirement. In other words, if you make $0, you get $3K, no questions asked.
This effectively makes her bill a version of Universal Basic Income – an idea that’s getting increasingly popular due to the disturbing level of income inequality and the threat of automation. 2020 Candidate Andrew Yang made it the centerpiece of his campaign as well.
According to Matt Bruenig, head of the People’s Policy Project, Tlaib’s plan could cut the # of people in poverty from 45M to 26.7M.
“Grim Reaper Mitch” will surely block it, tho
It’s too early to rejoice, tho. Mitch McConnell and the Republican-controlled Senate will no doubt shut Tlaib’s plan down the moment it reaches Senate floor.
About Democrat’s progressive bills, McConnell, back in April, said “If I’m still the majority leader of the Senate after next year, none of those things are going to pass the Senate. They won’t even be voted on. So think of me as the Grim Reaper.”
